"Transparent and intangible as sunlight, yet always and everywhere present, it lures a man on and on, from the red-walled canyons to the smoke-blue ranges beyond, in a futile but fascinating quest for the great, unimaginable treasure which the desert seems to promise."
Edward Abbey Desert Solitaire

3hattrio hails from the deserts of southern Utah on the edge of Zion National Park. This landscape, its traditions, and contemporary life here inspire our sound. We dedicate our music back to the desert people, the critters, the sand and rock and each rivulet of water that seeps out to give life to this place.

Greg Istock recorded and produced this recording. Most of our songs were written by Hal Cannon BMI and Greg Istock ASCAP,  Michael Greene did a final mix and it was mastered by James S. Anderson at the Bit Farm, Edward J. Bateman created the cover art. Alex Santiago made the band portrait.

3hattrio “Solitaire Lyrics

Texas Time Traveler (3:37) Cannon/Istock

Rose (3:15) Cannon/Istock

Just one scent of rose
Just one scent of rose
Softly came to me
Rolling down the road
Rolling down the road

Just one scent of rose
Blue, an empty sky
Blue, is our goodbye’s
Rolling down the road
Rolling down the road

Just one scent of rose
Just a lullaby
Blue to say goodbye
Rolling down the road
Rolling down the road

What do you Do? (2:44) Cannon

What do you do when your voice has no meaning?
What can you do when you cry out at night?
What do you do when your words don’t mean nothin’?
What can you do? What do you do?

What do you say when you only have one word
What do you say when your thoughts swarm like bees
What do you do when you can’t say nothin’
When the girl that you love is walkin’ away.

What can you say when your words stick like gum drops
How can you walk when your soul’s gripped with fear
How do you know that you’ll keep on livin’?
When the girl that you love slowly walks away from you

What do you do? What do you do?
What do you do? What do you do?

Get up Stand Up (4:14) Marley/Tosh

Chorus
Get up, stand up: stand up for your rights!
Get up, stand up: don’t give up the fight!
Get up, stand up: stand up for your rights!
Get up, stand up: don't give up your fight!

Preacherman, don't tell me,
Heaven is under the earth.
I know you don't know
What life is really worth.
It's not all that glitters is gold;
'Alf the story has never been told:
So now you see the light!
Stand up for your rights!
Chorus

We sick an' tired of-a your ism-skism game -
Dyin' 'n' goin' to heaven in-a Jesus' name.
We know when we understand:
Almighty God is a living man.
You can fool some people sometimes,
But you can't fool all the people all the time.
Now you see the light,
Come on stand up for your rights!
Chorus

Mojave (3:42) Cannon/Istock

Should I (2:48) Istock

Nothin’ you can do to keep from falling down
Eyes wide open, but they don’t see
You can call upon your angels to speed across the darkness
There’s nothin’ left to cover, nothin’ left to change

Just forget about the black, just forget about the black

And I can take it all apart, fake it to forget
Seal up in jars, on empty nights like this
Never mind the black, never mind the road back
Nothin’ left to cover, nothin’ left to change

Just forget about the black, nothing left to cover, nothin’ left to change

Should I pull it over, should I make a break,
Should I complicate it, should I hit the gas,
Should I check the mirror, Should I give a damn,
Should I complicate, should I hit the gas

Range (3:20) Cannon

The antelope leaps, the owls asleep
A man wonders through, that is all
Clouds race by, smell rain but its dry
That's how it is on the range
That's how it is on the range

Jack rabbit darts, blue grouse starts
the roll of some distant thunder
He won't stay long, he's moving along
That's how it is on the range
That's how it is on the range

Dark clouds roll in, its darker than sin
He heads for a rock overhang
Rain coming fast, he knows it won't last
That's how it is on the range

He finds what is left of a camp in this cleft
a campfires ancient reminder
He sifts through the sand, finds prints from small hands
Lays shards out, then leaves them behind

Life is so rare, but persistent out there
The desert is open and true
We make a small mark, then fade in the dark
That's how it is on the range
That's how it is on the range

Blood River (3:09) Cannon/Istock

In a world so intent on safe and easy
There are still treasures out there to find
I could take you there, in the morning
One small fee, you ride with me
What you will find you won’t believe
We could get it all this time
Why would I lie? Blood River will decide

With my own two eyes I have seen it,
All you need to know is where to find it
This time I want it all
So for one small fee
What you find on the other side of that river
Just lying there in the sand
It’s yours to keep, would I tell I lie?
Blood River will decide

Don’t you know there’s always a price to pay
There are things out there that you don’t understand
They thought it would be so easy
I heard none of them ever came back alive
Every once in while Blood River would rise, even on nights so clear
There’s always a curse, a spell, Blood River, will never tell

Eddy Mesa (5:25) Istock

He said he’s gonna go there to find a piece of something
Something that he felt long ago
Drive up on Eddy Mesa
They were always up there dancing and singing and carry on

He said he’s gonna go there to find a piece of something
Something that he left far behind him in time, oh yea
He’s gonna sit up high on Eddy Mesa
And chase the run away stars, flyin’ across the desert night sky

And he’ll change like the morning,
And he’ll change back to something
And he’ll change for a moment

He said he’s gonna go there to find a piece of something
Affairs of time and heart again, (slow and easy)
High up on Eddy Mesa, that is something there,
Something he could feel up there, feel up there

And he’ll change like the morning
Change back to something
And he’ll change like a song
And he’ll change for a moment
He’ll change like the morning
Change back to something
He’ll change like a song
Change for a moment

Bury Me Not (3:37) Traditional

Oh bury me not on the lone prairie,
These words came soft and plaintively
From the pallid lips of a boy who lay
On his dying bed at the end of day

Oh bury me not on the lone prairie
Where the coyotes howl and the wind blows free
When I die don’t bury me, ‘neath the western skies,
On the lone prairie

But we buried him there on the lone prairie,
Where the coyote howls and the wind blows free
In a shallow grave, just six by three
We buried him there on the lone prairie
